A guide is a person who leads anyone through unknown or unmapped country. This includes a guide of the real world (such as someone who conducts travellers and tourists through a place of interest), as well as a person who leads someone to more abstract places (such as to knowledge or wisdom).

Guide - meanings related to travel and recreational pursuits

There are many variants of guides in this context, and guides are often employed in any aspect of travel or adventure, or wherever there is an advantage to the client in terms of knowledge provided in improving the overall travel experience or making the client feel more safe due to the presumed expertise of the guide. These days guides will normally possess an area and field-specific qualification usually issued and/or recognised by the appropriate Guide's Association or licensing authority. However this is not always the case, and it is advisable for travellers paying a premium to go on an organised tour or journey because they think this will mean they will have a better experience to check the guide's qualifications beforehand.Explorers in the past venturing into territory unknown by their own people invariably hired guides. American West explorers Lewis and Clark hired a Shoshone Indian woman Sacagawea, and Wilfred Thesiger hired guides in the deserts that he ventured into, such as Kuri on his journey to the Tibesti Mountains in 1938. Aside from knowing the way or the area geographically, modern guides are usually hired to act as interpreters for those travellers who do not speak the local language and provide cultural, historical or other information on the area visited. Travel companies organising tours of large groups often have a guide or tour leader accompany the group. They might also be trained in First Aid and have other skills that reduce the risk for the tour operator to conduct these tours or the travel agency selling them. Tourist guide

Tourist Guides are representatives of the cities, regions and countries for which they are qualified. It depends largely on them if visitors feel welcome, want to stay longer or decide to come back. They therefore contribute considerably to the perception of the destination. Tourist Guides are able to help travellers understand the culture of the region visited and the way of life of its inhabitants. They have a particular role on the one hand to promote the cultural and natural heritage whilst on the other hand to help ensure its sustainability by making visitors aware of its importance and vulnerability. Mountain guide

Mountain guides are those employed in mountaineering; these are not merely to show the way but stand in the position of professional climbers with an expert knowledge of rock and snowcraft, which they impart to the amateur, at the same time assuring the safety of the climbing party. This professional class of guides arose in the middle of the 19th century when Alpine climbing became recognized as a sport.

In Switzerland, the central committee of the Swiss Alpine Club issues a guides’ tariff which fixes the charges for guides and porters; there are three sections, for the Valais and Vaudois Alps, for the Bernese Oberland, and for central and eastern Switzerland.

In Chamonix (France) a statue has been raised to Jacques Balmat, who was the first to climb Mont Blanc in 1786. Other notable European guides are Auguste Balmat, Michel Cros, Maquignay, J. A. Carrel, who accompanied Edward Whymper to the Andes, the brothers Lauener, Christian Almer and Jakob and Melchior Anderegg.

Wilderness guide

A wilderness guide is a person who takes a number of individuals to visit some part of wilderness, such as forest, bogs, hills, on or off marked paths, and ensure the safety of the group while leading them through the wilderness which the guide has knowledge of.

The first priority is the safety of the group, which is why wilderness guides are expected to have a command of basic survival skills (such as making shelters, fire-making, hiking, orienteering and first-aid) as well as experience in survival in extreme conditions and all seasons, and how to deal with an emergency. The guide is also expected to have a deep understanding of the nature of the place he is guiding in, and able to answer questions of the group concerning the local flora and fauna, ecology, geological morphology, as well as cultural history of the place visited.

Other skills may include traditional handicrafts and cooking methods, fishing, hunting, bird watching, nature conservation and animal specialties.

These wilderness guided tours usually take place on foot (or skis or snowshoes if there is snow) but may also involve other vehicles such as cars, snowmobiles, canoes/kayaks, or sledges (traditionally pulled by huskies or reindeers in countries such as Sweden, Finland and Canada).

Hunting guide

Guides employed by those seeking to hunt wildlife, especially big game animals in the wild. Hunting guides have been important in many areas of the world, including the American west, the Adirondacks, and Africa, etc. Hunting guides in Africa of European descent are commonly referred to as White hunter, although this is becoming a less fashionable term these days, as in most African countries today there are also native African "hunters" or hunting guides.

Safari guide

Guides employed on safari, usually for "photographic safaris", although the term can also refer to a "hunting guide" or Professional Hunter. Safari guides who are self-employed, working on their own account with their own marketing and clientele (in contrast with those who work for an employer) sometimes refer to themselves as "professional safari guides".

Military guides and development of Guides Regiments

In European wars up to the time of the French Revolution, the absence of large-scale detailed maps made local guides almost essential to the direction of military operations. In the 18th century the stricter organization of military resources led in various countries to the special training of guide officers who had the primary duty of finding, and if necessary establishing, routes across country. In the history of the American west, Native Americans and mountain men were important in leading military units and settlers alike.

The genesis of the "Guides" regiments may be found in a short-lived Corps of Guides formed by Napoleon in Italy in 1796, which appears to have been a personal escort or body guard composed of men who knew the country. Following the unification of Italy in 1870-71, the new national army included a regiment designated as Guides - the 19th Cavalleggieri (Light Horse).

In the Belgian Army the two Guides regiments, created respectively in 1833 and 1874, constituted part of the light cavalry and came to correspond to the Guard cavalry of other nations. Until the outbreak of World War I, they wore a distinctive uniform comprising a plumed busby, green dolman braided in yellow, and crimson breeches. Mechanised in October 1937, both regiments form armoured battalions in the modern Belgian Army.

In the Swiss army prior to 1914 the squadrons of "Guides" acted as divisional cavalry. In this role these light cavalry units were called upon, on occasion, to lead columns.

The "Queen’s own Corps of Guides" of the British Indian Army consisted of a unique combination of infantry companies and cavalry squadrons. After World War I the infantry element was incorporated in the 12th Frontier Force Regiment and the Guides Cavalry formed a separate regiment - the 10th Queen Victoria's Own Corps of Guides Cavalry (Frontier Force).

In drill, a "guide" is an officer or non-commissioned officer who regulates the direction and pace of movements.

Trip sitter

A psychedelic guide is someone who guides a drug user's experiences as opposed to a sitter who merely remains present, ready to discourage bad trips and handle emergencies but not otherwise getting involved. Guides are more common amongst spiritual users of entheogens. Psychedelic guides were strongly encouraged by Timothy Leary and the other authors of ''The Psychedelic Experience: A Guide Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead''. Trip sitters are also mentioned in the Responsible Drug User's Oath.

Shi Ren was a military general serving under the warlord Liu Bei during the late Han Dynasty period of Chinese history.

Biography

Shi Ren was from Guangyang (southwest of present-day Daxing District, Beijing). He served at Gong'an in Jing Province, under Guan Yu, who was appointed by Liu Bei to guard Jing Province. Following a dispute with Guan, Shi and Mi Fang defected to the warlord Sun Quan when Guan was away at the Battle of Fancheng. Shi and Mi allowed Sun's forces to overrun Jing Province, leading to Guan's defeat and death.

In fiction

In Luo Guanzhong's historical novel ''Romance of the Three Kingdoms'', Shi Ren's name was wrongly written as "Fu Shiren" (傅士仁). Despite this misspelling, his role is relatively consistent with history.

After Guan Yu was given orders to invade Fancheng, he appointed Shi Ren and Mi Fang as leaders of the vanguard. That night, a fire broke out in the vanguard's camp. However, Shi and Mi were too busy feasting to notice and the fire engulfed and destroyed much of the camp. Guan condemned the two generals for lack of care and sentenced them to death, but was stopped by Fei Shi who advised Guan against executing a general before the army had truly begun to march. Guan took the advice and instead flogged them forty times each. He then called upon Guan Ping and Liao Hua to replace them as van leaders and sent the two generals away, Shi Ren to Gongnan and Mi Fang to Nanjun.

After Sun Quan captured Jingzhou, he sent Yu Fan, a childhood friend of Shi Ren, to Gongnan in order to convince Shi to defect. Upon hearing of Yu Fan's approach, Shi Ren closed the gates of Gongnan and refused his friend entrance. Still, Yu Fan managed to contact Shi by attaching a letter to an arrow and firing it over the city walls. Upon reading the letter, Shi opened the gates and allowed Yu entrance. The two talked like old friends and Yu convinced Shi of Sun Quan's greatness, causing him to join Sun's army. After this, Lü Meng sent Shi Ren to Nanjun to convince Mi Fang to defect as well. Mi Fang was hesitant to desert Guan Yu, but once a messenger arrived in Nanjun and demanded rice for Guan's army in Fancheng, threatening punishment if Mi disobeyed, Shi Ren slew the messenger and Mi, fearing Guan Yu's response, defected to Sun Quan's side.

During the Battle of Xiaoting, Shi Ren and Mi Fang overheard their soldiers discussing a plan to kill them, so they assassinated their superior Ma Zhong and attempted to return to Liu Bei's side. Liu refused to accept their surrender and handed them over to Guan Yu's son Guan Xing, who executed them.

Niomi Arleen McLean-Daley (born 26 April 1981), who performs as Ms. Dynamite, is a double BRIT Award and three time MOBO Awards winning UK garage, R&B and hip hop singer, rapper and MC.

Biography

Ms. Dynamite was born and raised in Archway, a district in North London, to a Jamaican father and a Scottish mother. She grew up listening to reggae and hip hop music. Though she wanted to become a schoolteacher or social worker, her biggest aspiration was to be a musician. She is the eldest of eleven siblings, one of whom is a grime artist known as Akala, and attended Acland Burghley School in London.

Career

2001–04: ''A Little Deeper''

Ms. Dynamite (originally called Lady Dynamite) was first known for her vocals on the UK garage underground track "Booo!", which was regularly played on London pirate radio stations and was later released as a single. Whilst working at the radio station RAW FM, Ms Dynamite was discovered by Richard Forbes AKA DJ Sticky at a West End club. After a period as a member of the UK garage act So Solid Crew, she released her debut album, ''A Little Deeper'' in 2002, featuring the hit songs "It Takes More" and "Dy-na-mi-tee". In 2003, the album was released in the United States to critical acclaim. In 2002, Dynamite won the prestigious Mercury Music Prize, for ''A Little Deeper''. She donated the £20,000 prize to the NSPCC.

Her first public performance was at the closing ceremony of the 2002 Commonwealth Games at the City of Manchester Stadium. On 2 July 2005, she performed at the Live 8 concert in Hyde Park, London. Among the songs performed was "Redemption Song" – a Bob Marley penned song.

2005–06: ''Judgement Days''

On 11 September 2005, she returned to the limelight (having taken time off to have her son, Shavaar) with a new album entitled ''Judgement Days''. Featuring more social commentary, in songs such as the first double A-side single, "Judgement Day" / "Father" and the Tony Blair critique, "Mr Prime Minister," reviews of the album were not as favourable as those of her debut. However "Judgement Day" reached No. 25 in the UK Singles Chart.

On the 6 January 2006, Ms Dynamite was arrested outside a London nightclub, after a brawl in which she punched a male police officer in the face whilst in custody. She was convicted and sentenced to sixty hours of community service. The second single from ''Judgement Days'' was due to be "Fall In Love Again" (previously titled "When I Fall In Love"), with a release date of 30 January 2006. A video was shot for the track but, due to her arrest, the single was cancelled. The video did not surface until June 2006, when it was leaked on to the web.

In February 2006, she won the Naomi Award for Worst Urban Act.

Since her trouble in January 2006 and her disappearance from the public eye, Ms Dynamite confirmed that the much rumoured 'A Little Darker' album would be released in March 2006 as a mixtape. After the confirmation, the album was pushed back to June 2006. Also, in April 2006, Ms Dynamite confirmed that there would be no more releases from her ''Judgement Days'' album, and that she was due to start working on new material.

A collection of new and upcoming UK hip-hop and garage artists, was compiled by Ms Dynamite and her rapping brother Akala, who was voted Best Hip Hop Act at the MOBO Awards in September 2006.

In November 2006 she took part in a television show called ''The Race'' on Sky1. This was a week long event in which ten celebrities had to compete against each other on the track in different races building up to a thirty lap Formula Ford race on Sunday 12 November 2006. After about ten laps into the race disaster struck, and Ms. Dynamite hit the wall on the pit straight at about 100 mph. She was air lifted to hospital for overnight observations but later released.

2007–09: Break from music

After taking a break from the music scene for a couple of years, Dynamite guest hosted BBC Radio 1Xtra, and stated she would be releasing a third album 'Democracy' in 2009. The first single from the new album will be "Bad Gyal". This was however later confirmed to have been push back, to concentrate on other projects and well as motherhood.

Ms Dynamite appeared on ''Hell's Kitchen'' on ITV1 in 2009. She was voted out by public vote on 24 April 2009 finishing fourth. Ms Dynamite also appeared as an expert adviser on ''Goldie's Band: By Royal Appointment'' on BBC Two.

2010–present: Return to music and third album

In December 2010, Dynamite was featured on Katy B's second single, "Lights On". It peaked at number 4 in the UK singles chart. She was also featured on the track "Fire", which featured on Magnetic Man's debut album.

On 3 August 2011 in an interview with Digital Spy, Dynamite confirmed that she is working on her third studio album, and confirmed that the lead single "Neva Soft" (produced by Labrinth) would be released on 4 September. Her third studio album is set to be released at the beginning of 2012.

Patrick George "Paddy" Considine (born 5 September 1973) is an English actor, filmmaker, screenwriter, musician and frequent collaborator with Shane Meadows. Best known to audiences for his portrayals of dark, troubled, morally or mentally ambiguous characters. He has starred in films such as ''In America'', ''Dead Man's Shoes'', ''The Cry of the Owl'', ''Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee'' and ''Hot Fuzz'', as well as in television films such as ''The Red Riding Trilogy'', ''The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher'', and ''PU-239''.

Considine came to prominence in the early-2000s with a string of strong performances in independent films that prompted the Observer to describe him as "The best-kept secret in British movies". In addition to leading and supporting roles in Hollywood films, Considine has frequently acted in independent British films and television shows. Aside from acting, he directed and wrote Tyrannosaur, a film based on his directorial debut, the short film ''Dog Altogether'' both of which feature actors Peter Mullan, Olivia Colman and Paul Popplewell. He was both actor and writer on several music videos, namely the Arctic Monkeys promotional video for "Leave Before the Lights Come On".

Among other accolades, Considine has received an Evening Standard British Film Award, Empire Award and Thessaloniki Film Festival Awards as well as eight other award nominations for his acting work. He has also a BAFTA Award, British Independent Film Award, Silver Lion at the 2007 Venice Film Festival and the Seattle International Film Festival Short Film Jury Award (Narrative Special Jury Prize) for best short with Dog Altogether as well as a second BAFTA Award, British Independent Film Award and a World Cinema Directing Award for his feature directorial debut film, ''Tyrannosaur'', at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

Early life

Considine was born, brought up and still resides in Burton upon Trent in Staffordshire,. He grew up with his brother and sisters in a council estate in Winshill, a suburb of Burton. In 1990 he enrolled to do a National Diploma in Performing Arts at Burton College, where he first met Shane Meadows. Neither Considine nor Meadows completed the Performing Arts course.

He attended, among other schools, Abbot Beyne Senior School and Burton College, all in Burton upon Trent. In 1993, Meadows moved from his home town of Uttoxeter to study in Nottingham, and Considine moved away in 1994 to study photography at the University of Brighton, where he went on to get a first-class degree in photography. In April 2011, Considine revealed that he had been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome.

Film career

Film debut and foray into American cinema

After graduating with a BA in Photography from the University of Brighton, Meadows cast Considine in several short films, as well as his second feature, ''A Room for Romeo Brass'' (1999), in which Considine, in his screen debut, plays the disturbed character Morell.

Considine's performance in ''A Room For Romeo Brass'' led to Pawel Pawlikowski casting him in his first starring role in ''Last Resort'' (2000) the following year. Considine played the love-struck misfit Alfie, for which he won the best actor award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival.

After coming to prominence for his role as Alfie and Morell, Considine increased his profile during the early-to-mid 2000s via supporting and starring roles in cult films such as Michael Winterbottom's ''24 Hour Party People'' (in which he played the first of many real-life portrayals: Rob Gretton, manager of the post punk band Joy Division/New Order) and Jim Sheridan's ''In America''.

Mainstream success in the mid-2000s

In 2004, Considine starred in what was at that point the most significant role of his career; as Richard in Shane Meadows' revenge film, ''Dead Man's Shoes'' (2004), a film he co-wrote and won the 'Best British Actor' award for at the 2005 Empire Awards. In the same year, he co-starred alongside Emily Blunt and Natalie Press in ''My Summer of Love'' (2004), his second film with director Pawel Pawlikowski. Both films were recognized on the award circuit where Considine earned five nominations and two wins. The following year, Considine played the suspected murderer of Rolling Stones co-founder Brian Jones in ''The Builder''; Frank Thorogood in Stephen Woolley's ''Stoned'' (2005).

It was around this time that Considine earned his reputation as a popular portrayer of cinema villains, antiheroes and darker characters. 2005 also saw the release of Considine's second 'Hollywood' film in Ron Howard's ''Cinderella Man''.

Since 2005

Considine appeared opposite Gary Oldman in the Spanish thriller ''Bosque de Sombras'' (2006). It was during the filming of Bosque de Sombras that Considine penned what later became his debut short, ''Dog Altogther''; Considine claims that it was Oldman who gave him confidence to make the film and subsequently led to his thanking Oldman during his BAFTA award acceptance speech.

In 2006, he starred opposite Radha Mitchell in his first TV film; ''PU-239'' (also known as ''The Half Life of Timofey Berezin''; 2006), as Timofey Berezin, a worker at a Russian nuclear facility who gets exposed to a lethal dose of radiation. In order to provide for his family, he steals some plutonium and sets out to sell it on Moscow's black market. In 2007 Considine landed roles in two popular big budget films. In the third film in the ''Bourne Trilogy'' film series, playing a Guardian newspaper reporter Simon Ross in ''The Bourne Ultimatum'' alongside Matt Damon, and his first comedic role as DS Andy Wainwright in Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright's Police action comedy ''Hot Fuzz''.

In 2008 Considine starred in ''My Zinc Bed'' a TV film for BBC/HBO alongside Uma Thurman and Jonathan Pryce. In 2009 he starred as Peter Hunter in the Channel 4 miniseries ''Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord'' (1980), based on the novels by David Peace and another collaboration with Meadows, ''Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee'', a low-budget mock-rock-umentary (it was unscripted, adlibbed and filmed in five days at a cost of £48,000), featuring the Arctic Monkeys and UK rapper Scorzayzee, in which Considine plays roadie "Le Donk", which premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

In 2011, Considine co-starred with Craig Roberts, Sally Hawkins and Noah Taylor on a film adaptation of Joe Dunthorne's book ''Submarine'', for which Richard Ayoade directed and wrote the screenplay. Also in 2011, Considine appeared as Porter Nash in the adaptation of the Ken Bruen novel ''Blitz'', directed by Elliott Lester, also starring Jason Statham, David Morrissey and Aidan Gillen, as well as starring in ''The Suspicions of Mr Whicher''.

Also in 2011, Considine was briefly reunited with one of his 'A Room For Romeo Brass' co-stars; The BAFTA-winning English actress Vicky McClure. The two shared the screen in a big-budget TV advert to promote "Films For Life Season". The ad was shot over two days in Spain by director Kate Dunn.

Considine has consistently displayed a flair for regional and world accents; along with the Gypsy Midlander Morell in his first role in 1999's ''A Room for Romeo Brass'', Considne has played Londoner Frank Thorogood and Detective Whicher in ''Stoned'' and ''The Suspicions of Mr Whicher'', respectively, as well as a Russian nuclear plant worker in ''PU-239''. Two roles as a Welshman in ''Submarine'' and ''Happy Now'', respectively. An Irish immigrant in ''In America'', a Yorkshireman in both ''Red Riding'' and ''My Summer of Love'', an American in ''Cry of the Owl'' and ''Cinderella Man'', and sported a West Country burr in ''Hot Fuzz''.

Considine has appeared in several music videos, most notably "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face" (2002) by Coldplay and Moloko's "Familiar Feeling" (2003), as well as the Arctic Monkeys track "Leave Before The Lights Come On" (2006) (he wrote the video).

Filmmaking

In 2007, Considine directed and wrote the award-winning ''Dog Altogether'', starring Peter Mullan, partially based on the life of Mullan's father Joseph. Dog Altogether won the 2007 BAFTA award for Best Short Film, as well as a Silver Lion for Best Short Film at the 2007 Venice Film Festival a Best British Short at the 2007 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) and the Seattle International Film Festival Short Film Jury Award (Narrative Special Jury Prize), as well as a World Cinema Directing Award for his feature directorial debut Tyrannosaur at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

Current and future projects

Considine is currently writing his next film, a ghost story called 'The Leaning, with plans to direct and continues to work with Meadows on ''King of the Gypsies'', a biopic of bare-knuckle fighter Bartley Gorman, whom Considine met and became friends with whilst working as a photographer. Considine recently completed working with Dakota Fanning, Olivia Williams and Jeremy Irvine on ''Now Is Good'', a film adaptation of Jenny Downham's novel, ''Before I Die''. Considine plans to direct his third film based on an adaptation of the non-fiction novel; 'The Years of the Locust' [A True Story of Murder, Money and Mayhem in the Last Age of Boxing] by Jon Hotten. A true tale of a sociopathic boxing promoter; Fat Rick Parker and his doomed relationship with his naive fighter Tim Anderson. Which has been optioned by Inflammable/Warp films.

Musical activity

After a short stint in a virtual, comedy thrash group called Grunt during college, Considine and Shane Meadows formed the band She Talks To Angels (inspired by a Black Crowes song of the same name) with friends Richard Eaton, Simon Hudson, Nick Hemming as lead guitar, Meadows as vocalist and Considine as drummer. He is now in a rock band called ''Riding the Low'', and released an EP in 2009.

Personal life

Despite numerous lead and supporting roles in popular British and Hollywood films, Considine remains private in his personal life, once stating if he ever became a celebrity he'd "fucking disappear and go and make shoes like Daniel Day-Lewis" (a reference to Day-Lewis' long sabbatical working as a cobbler in Italy), Considine was born and brought up in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, and continues to live in the Midlands with his own family.

Asperger's syndrome

In 2010, aged 36, Considine was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder relating to difficulties with communication and social skills. In a candid interview with ''The Telegraph'', he revealed that he suffered from "a debilitating sense of detachment” from both the people around him and his surroundings and that he struggled on a practical level too – certain noises, bright lights, and even wallpaper and fabrics presented problems." Of the diagnosis Considine revealed that discovering that he had Asperger's was a relief.

Family

, he resides in Burton upon Trent with his wife and three children.
